Easily the most interesting indie pop band out of Montreal. The catch being they don’t make indie pop. The Submissives is the brainchild of someone named Deb Edison and they do very funky takes of old american country ballads, but with total beginner’s chops. The result is intensely catchy songs falling apart at the seams. Dolly Parton on sizzurp, the Shangri-La’s on methadone. This is drug-related, in a cool creative way. And the disheveled retro visual aesthetic is effortless and strong.
